Logbooks and Overhead Cranes

One of the most common questions we get at Overhead Crane Solutions is, “Does my overhead crane need a logbook?”  The answer is “most likey.”  If your overhead crane capacity is 2000 kilograms (4409 lbs), You must follow the rules laid out in OH&S part 6. Section 65 Logbooks state that “Logbooks are a crucial source of relevant information about the operational condition of a lifting device. Employers have the option of using a conventional hard copy version that typically stays with the lifting device or an electronic version typically linked to a computer.”(OH&S PART 6 Section 65 (1))  The only exception is “Manually operated hoists are used widely across many industries. Often these hoists are portable units such as come‐alongs transported in vehicles and with equipment. Reflecting the difficulty and impracticality of maintaining log books for these hoists, logbooks are not required for manually operated hoists.” (OH&S PART 6 Section 65(2)
