2. Perform a Function Test

Operate the crane through its normal motions without a load to verify that everything responds correctly before beginning work.

3. Test the Start and Emergency Stop

Confirm that the controls power up correctly and that the emergency stop functions as intended.

4. Verify Labels and Capacity Markings

Ensure all operating labels remain legible and that the crane’s rated capacity is clearly displayed.

5. Test All Motions

Check the bridge, trolley, and hoist motions at normal operating speeds. Movement should be smooth and consistent, without hesitation or unusual vibration.

6. Verify Brake Operation

Confirm that each motion stops properly and that the hoist securely holds a suspended load without drifting.

7. Inspect Spooling and Reeving

Inspect the way the wire rope or chain travels through the hoist. Improper spooling or reeving can accelerate wear and affect lifting performance.

8. Inspect the Hoist Chain

If equipped with a chain hoist, check for wear, twisting, damaged links, or signs of unauthorized welding or grinding.

9. Inspect the Wire Rope

Look for broken wires, kinks, corrosion, poor lubrication, or damaged end connections. These are common indicators that further inspection or replacement may be required.

10. Inspect the Bottom Hook

Check for cracks, excessive wear, twisting, stretching, proper swivel movement, and confirm that the safety latch is present and functioning correctly.

11. Inspect the Bottom Block

Inspect the block for damage, worn sheaves, visible capacity markings, and smooth sheave operation.

12. Test the Upper Limit Switch

With no load attached and using slow speed only, verify that the upper limit switch functions correctly.

13. Test the Lower Limit

Confirm that the lower limit functions properly and that the required number of wraps remain on the hoist drum.

14. Inspect the Trolley Connection

Where accessible, inspect the trolley connection to the hoist and verify proper spacing and secure attachment.

15. Verify the Anti-Collision System

If your crane is equipped with an anti-collision system, confirm it is functioning correctly before operation.


If You Find a Problem

If any deficiency is identified during the inspection, it should be recorded in the comments section of the logbook and reported to your supervisor.

If the condition could affect the safe operation of the crane, the equipment should be removed from service until it has been assessed and repaired by qualified personnel.
