Introduction
Starting a career as an overhead crane operator can feel overwhelming — especially when you’re faced with a whole new set of industry-specific terms. At Overhead Crane Solutions Inc., we believe knowledge is the foundation of safety.
That’s why we’ve put together this beginner-friendly guide to crane terminology and paired it with information on our Overhead Crane Training Program in Alberta to help you turn that knowledge into safe, confident operation.
Essential Overhead Crane Terms Every Operator Should Know
1. Bridge
The horizontal beam that spans the work area and supports the trolley and hoist.
2. Runway
The rails or beams that the bridge travels along, either attached to a building or supported by columns.
3. Hoist
The lifting device that includes the hook, rope/chain, and lifting mechanism — responsible for raising and lowering loads.
4. Trolley
Moves the hoist horizontally across the bridge to position the load.
5. Span
The distance between the crane’s runways — crucial for ensuring proper fit and safe operation.
6. Load Capacity (Rated Load)
The maximum safe weight the crane can lift. Exceeding this capacity is dangerous and prohibited.
7. Load Test
A regulated test to ensure the crane can safely lift its rated capacity.
8. Limit Switch
A safety device that stops the hoist or trolley when it reaches the end of its travel path.
9. Wire Rope
The high-strength steel cable used for lifting — must be regularly inspected for wear, fraying, or corrosion.
10. End Trucks
The wheel assemblies at each end of the bridge that allow it to travel along the runway.
Why Knowing the Lingo Matters
Clear communication is essential in crane operations. Understanding these terms ensures everyone on site speaks the same language, reducing the risk of accidents and downtime.
